Canada Pranked At Copenhagen Climate Summit

With all of the news today being about the climate and the so called climate summit happening in Copenhagen it was only inevitable that there would be a practical joke played. The prank started out with a hoax press release and stated that Canada would make sweeping cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions.
The Canadian prime minister was a little pissed since it made statements for Canada that he didn’t agree to, obviously. Canada is in the spotlight because of its energy consumption, and the pollution generated by its vast oil sands development in northern Alberta.
The three-part spoof announced that the Great White North was about to do what critics of climate policy have urged it to do. It declared:
“In a major development coming three days before the final round of UN climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, and responding to the recent concerns expressed by the G77 bloc of countries, Canada’s Attache for Environment and Planning announced today an ambitious plan for a new climate framework that answers vital concerns voiced by developing nations.”
It pledged that Canada will bring in new targets, by 2020 reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent below 1990 levels.
A second spoof, released soon thereafter, claimed to be a denunciation of the earlier statement:
“One hour ago, a spoof press release targeted Canada in order to generate hurtful rumours and mislead the Conference of Parties on Canada’s positions on climate change, and to damage Canada’s standing with the international business community.”
A third send-up took the form of a video supposedly from a Uganda delegate praising Canada’s bold action.
It wasn’t clear who is behind the prank but they think it could be the Yes Men who recently pulled off a staged press conference pretending to speak for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C.
